I Tried Oil Pulling For A Year- This is What Happened

A couple of years earlier, I suffered from bleeding gums and cavities. I ended up doing a root canal treatment for one of my teeth. I thought this is the time for me to change myself for good and decided to come up with lifestyle changes to save my gums and teeth. I researched and found out that oil pulling has worked wonders for many people with dental problems, then came the confusion on which oil should I use, how and when I must do oil pulling. I dug deeper into this topic by reading a few Ayurveda books and found out that oil pulling is called Kavala in Ayurvedic text. Traditionally oil pulling is done with Sesame oil – The king of Oils, So I decided to start my oil pulling with sesame oil rather than coconut oil. I have been doing oil pulling for a year and here are the pros and cons of it.

How I Do Oil Pulling?

Upon waking up, I wash my face with a mild face wash, gargle with plain water and move on to oil pulling. I take 1 tbsp of sesame oil in my mouth, swish and pull the oil throughout the mouth for 10- 15 minutes. While I am doing oil pulling, I use the time efficiently to chop vegetables required for cooking or write the to-do list of the day. After 15 minutes, I spit the oil into the trash, and now the oil looks white in colour. I follow it by rinsing my mouth with warm water.

After oil pulling, I follow it by brushing my teeth with tooth paste, on alternate days instead of paste I use Ayurvedic tooth powder to brush my teeth.

I have been doing oil pulling for a year, and these are the benefits that I have seen in my life after doing it.

Healthy Gums:

After I started to do oil pulling within a couple of months, I was able to see a major difference in my gums. My bleeding gums became strong, and it was no longer swollen. The bleeding of the gums stopped, and it did not hurt while brushing.

No New Cavity:

Unlike a few people, I will not say that the existing cavity vanished from my teeth after doing oil pulling, but there was no new cavity in my teeth, and they were stronger than before.

Plaque No More:

I had a few plaque formations on my lower teeth, and it started to vanish away after doing oily pulling for 6 months. The good thing is it never came back.

Natural Teeth whitening:

I was able to see that my teeth became white gradually after I started to do oil pulling. This was an unexpected benefit from oil pulling. I have even got a compliment for my white teeth after I started doing oil pulling.

What you should not expect from Oil Pulling?

Sinusitis Relief: I have read in a few blogs and articles that oil pulling helped them withSinusitis, but I was not able to see any improvement with my Sinusitis.

Detoxification: No, it did not detoxify me in any way. Clean eating habits is the only way to detoxify your body. Say Adios to Junk and preserved food to detoxify your body. Oily pulling does bot help with it.

Weight Loss: I have read in a few articles that oil pulling aid in weight loss, but nothing of that sort happened in my case. Calorie deficit and simple workout help in achieving weight loss. If you want to try oil pulling to aid weight loss, you might be disappointed.

TIPS THAT I HAVE LEARNED FROM DOING OIL PULLING FOR A YEARS:

  • Start simple, first start oil pulling for 5 minutes, then gradually build it till 15- 20 minutes.
  • If you do not like the smell or taste of sesame oil, try coconut oil.
  • Do not swallow the oil, it has toxins and bacteria after swishing it around the mouth.
  • Spit the oil in the trash to avoid clogging of the drain.
  • Rinse with warm water, remove the oil flavour from the mouth.
  • Oil pulling for 15 minutes might seem like a big deal when you read it, but when you do oil pulling by multitasking it with reading a paper or preparing breakfast, time will fly away.
  • Kids are not a great candidate for oil pulling as they might swallow the oil.
  • If you have a cavity, rinse your mouth with warm salt water at night.
  • I use cold-pressed oil for oil pulling.
  • If you want to improve your oral hygiene, try oil pulling. You will not be disappointed.

You’ve really shared your personal experience, thank you for that. I love reading blog posts like this.

I remember trying oil pulling as a kid and fortunately, didn’t swallow it. It was a one-time thing after watching an ad on the television so I didn’t continue doing it. Hopefully, I should give it a try once again.

Visiting your blog after a long time. Hope all is well at your end. <3
